Catching up on photos

These are from two weekends ago, when Anatole, Mike, and I went down to the distillery district to enjoy our newfound springtime sunlight. We brought cameras, of course. Anatole's already posted a shot from that trip.

See the full set of Distillery photos.

Very cool! You've inspired me to start posting some pics on my site again. Got a new not-so-expensive camera but it is letting me catch some memories and photos of the city. Thanks for sharing these!

Hey Bernardo,

Thanks for the comment, and thanks for stopping by so often!

Hey Madhava. This particular photo of the "Mill St. Brewery" sign is quite surprising because the sign looks SO artificial, like it was rendered in Maya and pasted onto the photo.

A wonderful reminder, perhaps, of the artifice behind the entire Distillery district. That's not to say I am against the project; I actually prefer the layering of shiny new on old rather than the faux-finish of, say, that light attached to the wall right next to the sign.

I have a question, that I would love to discuss with you at length sometime, but will launch here since I'm thinking of it: do you think all this photography is affecting how you interact with the urban spaces you're shooting? I mean, did you go to the Distillery district to enjoy the space or to photograph it for your blog? Are you able to take a few carefully considered shots and still enjoy a beer and stroll the space in the same care-free way you would if you weren't carrying your camera?

I.e., can you take the measure of an urban space, take a sampling, without compromising how you live in that space? Are photo blogs actually a bane to the critical urban flaneur?

A lot of this, I suppose, has to do with how one remembers the city. For instance (and I realize this is being pretty extreme), because you had your camera, will your remember more of the details you photographed than, say, your conversations with your friends while you were there? I.e. is the skin of the city, rather than your experience, coming to the fore? OR, do the photos actually provide cues back into memories of what you were doing on that trip? Given that these are compositions of form, material, and light rather than snapshots of people, though, I would be surprised if that's the case.

These are beautiful pictures, I'm just wondering where the whole photo-blog thing is going.

Nice photos, Madhava. I posted another one from the Distillery District today.

George: Very interesting questions, which I won't get to until tomorrow, I'm afraid. Suffice it to say I definitely enjoyed my beer. And the chocolate. Oh, the chocolate!

Thanks for posting such cool pics and including links to your ohter bloggin' pals. Chelsea Gay's site is another of my faves. I had to add you to my list of favorite blogs. Keep me on the list for the livesquidinabox t-shirts. I'm not joking. *-)
