Joanne Chong and I are co-chairing the organizing committee for the 2005 incarnation of the Intervarsity Choral Festival. I’ve been tinkering with logo ideas for slightly longer than real planning has been going on, and I think I’ve got a concept I’m pretty happy with now:
It makes a little more sense if you know that the five university choirs involved are from London (UWO), Toronto (U of T), Peterborough (Trent), Kingston (Queen’s), and Ottawa (U of O), each of which is marked with a whole note on the staff and the underlying map of southern Ontario.
I’m going to build a “good” version in Illustrator soon, so, if you have comments, I’d love to hear them.
Posted by madhava at April 12, 2004 04:33 PMWow, that's quite the high concept logo you've got going there. I'm impressed. But inquiring (non-musical) minds want to know -- how does it sound when you sing it? ;)

Posted by: Matej at April 12, 2004 10:49 PMummm.... can we say "brilliant"? i might attend just to see the logo!
just one question, though. wouldn't london be an E? maybe it's further south than i thought...
It sounds a lot like D,G,D,C,F? Not much help, I know.
Great work Madhava!
Posted by: Chelsea at April 13, 2004 12:31 PMWell, you know I think it's good :)
I continue to picture it in my mind's eye, however, with a bit more colour -- perhaps in line with the colours of the various schools -- although I understand if budgetary concerns restrict it to black and white.
Also, I might suggest reducing the size or weight of the whole notes, in an effort to share visual emphasis with the title of the event.
Posted by: beltzner at April 13, 2004 02:54 PMOh, do you know how tempting it is to write a comment where I blather on about its aesthetic appeal and the visual satisfaction I derive from staring at such a paragon of artistic creativity? :) Not quite tempting enough! But the idea definitely sounds great and I have no doubt looks good to boot.
See you tomorrow, hopefully!
I think only U of T should get a whole note. Everyone else should get quarter notes, except UWO which should get a sixteenth. It should be flat, too.
There's gotta be a Bach cantata somewhere that starts this way...
