All the news that's fit to... um...

This long-overdue post covers several unrelated topics. Please use caution.

Evidence
I've finally put photos up from a couple of recent events:

Mark's vodka tasting party

The Hart House Chorus' black-tie fundraiser

This latter event featured the debut of the Chorus' new theme cocktail, the Hartini. It ended up being popular, probably in spite of the priorities I held for its creation:

  1. Name featuring a chorus or Hart House pun
  2. Theme ingredient(s) that link it to the chorus or Hart House (it ended up being Hart House Farm maple syrup)
  3. Taste

Out of my depth for the last phase, I placed a last-minute and slightly hysterical phone call to cocktail experts (and my annual cocktail party co-conspirators) Mark and Aven. It turned out that, against all odds, they'd recently discovered/created a drink involving maple syrup and Canadian whiskey, so we were set.

Ecumenism
In other news, I was recently contacted by another Madhava. Madhava Jay is an Australian currently living, and blogging, in England. There aren't a lot of Madhavas around, so this is simultaneously cool and unsettling. Seeing other people signing your name to things is something that most people have to deal with all the time, but it's strange for me.

Adventures in morphology
Edward Tufte, information design deity and author of several seminal design books has posted a chapter from his forthcoming book, Beautiful Evidence. Go read it now. It was posted in his website's forum so that readers can make suggestions and contribute examples; I ended up coining another word: graphictive (graph + adjective).

Mmm ... vodka tasting party. A highlight of my recent vacation was being able to pick up a bottle of Zubrowka for $3.75 USD in St. Maarten. Yeah, I thought it was a typo, too.

I still can't get that Chronicle of Higher Education link to resolve, by the way. Apparently those of us in Ottawa aren't privy to the entire Internet. Damned NCC censors!

Re: the article on adjectives
I was quite amused by the quotation from William Zinsser in the first paragraph: "Most adjectives are ... unnecessary."

So, you update for the first time in a week and you leave complaints on *my* blog because I'm not updating frequently enough? Plbbt. That's what I say. (And I'm going to go post now, so you can find out all about my knitting adventures tomorrow. I can tell that you're psyched about that).

I'm glad the cocktail worked out - maple syrup makes anything taste good!

Also, I feel your name pain. I still haven't found anyone with my first name, but I do see Aven as a last name occasionally, and it confuses the heck out of me. (At this very minute, the Marks and Mikes in our life are laughing bitterly at us, I'm sure).

Aven:

Not complaints! Encouragement!
